The Real Story

July 30, 2021

The Wedding Toaster, the debut title from Emily Rotondi, is a story of second chances and transformation.

The story of the conception of The Wedding Toaster proves to be just the same. The inspiration for the story came from a toast Rotondi gave at her best friend's wedding almost fifteen years ago. "The toast Maggie gives at Carrie's wedding is very much based on the toast I gave at my best friend's wedding." Of course, just like Maggie, Rotondi did not write her speech down, but rather spoke from the heart. "I kept receiving compliments on the toast and one guest came up to me and said 'you should do this for a living' and a light bulb went off in my head and the story of The Wedding Toaster was born." Of course, the book didn't come to life right away. "I wrote the story fourteen years ago. I started sending it out to agents. Some requested reads and some passed altogether. I even took a screenwriting class and converted it to a screenplay. At any rate, it's been a long road to publication." But Rotondi never gave up. "Most years I'd take it off the shelf, dust it off, and send it out for another whirl. Some years I didn't even try. I can't even tell you how many rejections I received." One of the biggest motivations that kept Rotondi in the pursuit of her dream were her students. "I taught eighth grade language arts for ten years. Every year I'd share the story with my classes and have them read a scene from the script. Their enthusiasm for the story and their unwavering belief in me is really what kept me trying to get it published." Finally, Rotondi has reached her goal. In March, 2020, just days into the start of the COVID lock down, Austin Macauley publishers offered her a contract for publication. "I remember thinking, this is so strange. The world seems to be falling apart but my dream just came true. It was very surreal." The Wedding Toaster debuts July 30, 2021. It is available for pre-order on Amazon. As for Rotondi, she couldn't be happier. "I'm just so thrilled for my story. I adore these characters, especially Maggie, and their story deserves to be heard."

"There is something delicious about writing the first words of a story. You never quite know where they'll take you.”
